One of the best things you can do for your child is to introduce books early and often. This is an important way to help build a warm child/parent bond and to put your child on a path to success in school and life. In keeping with these goals, the library offers two reading clubs during the summer in which about 1,000 local children participate.
Our Read-to-Me Club is for pre-readers. The children report how many books are read to them and add stickers or stamps to their markers on a bulletin board display. Recent themes have included Curious George and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A party is held for participants in August.
Our Summer Reading Club is a ten-week program open to all readers. The Hart Library children’s librarians visit all the local schools annually to promote the club. Each child has a reading record on which to record titles read and number of pages. A marker is moved on a bulletin board display as the child accumulates pages. We also provide incentives and rewards (puzzles, a weekly raffle, and ice cream coupons) to keep children reading during the summer so that they will keep and enhance their hard-won skills. A celebration is held in August for all participants. Please ask us about how your child can join!
Tweens and teens are invited to join a special Young Adult summer reading club which offers a contest and prizes.
We make every effort to support the summer reading lists issued by the eleven elementary schools in the Yorktown and Lakeland districts—by ordering multiple copies when possible and with special displays. The borrowing privileges that allow patrons to order books and audio materials from other libraries in the Westchester Library System are very helpful as well. These requests can be placed at the library or from a home/office computer at www.yorktownlibrary.org.
