Note from the incoming President of the Board of the Friends of the Library:
After many years of unflagging service Mary Connelly is stepping down as president of the board of the Friends of the John C. Hart Memorial Library. Many thanks to her for all that she has achieved during her tenure. I look forward to stepping into that position and being a part of this vital group.
The Friends of the Library perform two very important functions. First, they work to ensure that the library remains the vibrant part of the community it has become, with such programs as the Sunday Concert Series, our many children's programs, the books sales, and the pumpkin decorating event, along with many others. Second, they support the workings of the library by providing material support (for example, their moneys purchased the library sign out front, and fully or partially pay for needed equipment and supplies indoors) and by encouraging and recognizing the volunteers who are so generous in assisting the library staff in their endeavors.
From the time of its inception, funding for all the Friends programs has come from library patrons and supporters – from the modest membership fee, from donations, and from raffles, book sales, bake sales and quilt sales. It has been a winning relationship for all involved. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Library, it is easy to do, and we would welcome your ideas and your support. Simply speak to any librarian or turn to the back of any of our Sunday Concert programs for more information.
As a 15-year resident of Yorktown and a longtime resident of Westchester County, I am very aware and appreciative of the beauties and benefits of living in this area, and our public libraries have always been important to my family and me. I am so happy to be able to give something back to the institution that has been a constant and valuable part of our lives.
Hope to see you at the library and at our various events.
With thanks,
Dan Forman

Fund raising is an integral part of any Friends activity. From annual membership dues, an on-going book sale in the Library and the much anticipated large annual book and bake sale, comes the income the Friends need. You see the fruits of their work every day at the Library. Their contributions make possible the expansion of several of our most popular collections; Express Books and DVD’s, Audio-Books, and Graphic novels. In addition, the Sunday Concert series and many Children’s Department programs are funded solely through the Friends of the Library.
There is an annual meting of the Friends in June, when a new budget is adopted and elections are held for its Officers.
Watch the bulletin boards and flyers in the Library and the Newsletters we send out quarterly for announcements of other library events.
The Library Board of Trustees and the staff are grateful to the Friends for the fine work they do and the help they offer – their assistance greatly enriches the Library. The Library Board, the Friends Board and I all welcome your suggestions about added services or resources you would like to see developed to meet your needs. Your membership in the Friends is invited.
